Mother Sets New
Record for 2007
Sydney Tower Run-Up

The 2007 Tower Run-up was held on 24 August and gave us a new Run-up record by just 1 second! Dashing up Sydney Tower’s 1504 steps in 9 minutes 15 seconds, Angela Leadbeatter beat the previous female record of 9 minutes 16 seconds which she had set herself in 2000.

Ms Leadbeatter is a 30-year-old mother who trains by pushing her 15 month old son's pram. She lives in Pelican near Newcastle and is also a past winner of the prestigious Empire State Building Run Up in New York. Her prize for winning the Sydney Tower Run-Up is a return flight to New York to again test her mettle in the Empire State Building race in February 2008.

More than 200 contestants took part in the 2007 Run-Up from Pitt Street Mall to the tower’s 250m-high Observation Deck, raising money for the Cancer Council NSW on its annual Daffodil Day fundraiser.

The fastest male runner was Scott McTaggart from Canberra, who won the race for the second consecutive year, crossing the finish line in 8 minutes and 12 seconds. Mr McTaggart has also won a return flight to New York to compete in the Empire State Building race. Click here to read Scott's report on the New York race.

The male record for the Tower Run-Up is held by Paul Crake, who won in 6 minutes and 52 seconds in 2000.

The field of athletes, aged 17-60 years, included champion ironman Ky Hurst, who ran a time of 9 minutes and 48 seconds, and ironwoman Candice Falzon, who achieved a time of 13 minutes and 51 seconds.

“The Run-Up is a key event for Sydney Tower and we were very pleased to be able to support the Cancer Council NSW on one of their biggest fundraising days of the year – Daffodil Day,” Sydney Tower Marketing Executive Jodie Crane said.

Age group category winners and corporate winners received double Skywalk passes, valued at $198, combining unsurpassed birds’-eye views of Sydney with the thrill of stepping out onto glass-floored viewing platforms extending over the edge of the tower’s golden turret.
